Grade 10 Science Garden Project

Vision

Students will create a school garden to learn the benefits of gardening. Through the Grade 10 Science class, they gained knowledge from both the Weather and Ecosystems units. This knowledge has practical applications which makes the learning more effective. They will harvest their garden in the fall and use the harvest for a school feast. The garden addressed the environmental dimensions by producing quality, organic food that is healthier and easier to access. They will learn about composting. Students will realize the fiscal benefits of producing their own foods. Socially, it may increase the number of local gardens in the community. Parents may develop an interest in having their own gardens, once they reap their harvest.

Action

Students created a school garden. They grew plants from seeds. During the month of April and May, students cared for the plants. The soil was prepared by removing sod, rototilling, and adding topsoil. They planted both vegetables and fruit. Students completed 100% of the work for this project. It has been a worthwhile and enjoyable project!
