Milk Bag Sleeping Mats

Vision

Our vision for Canada is… to re-purpose milk bags to reduce the amount of plastic being sent to landfills.

Action

One Grade 9 students in our Girl Talk group came up with the idea of creating sleeping mats for homeless youth in our area. She suggested re-purposing plastic milk bags for the material, as a means to help the environment and to make a difference in our community. We have reached out to our school community for milk bag donations and have encouraged other students to join our milk bag mat project to help reduce the amount of plastic going to landfills. A number of students have given up their lunch break (several days a week) to work on creating the mats which we will be delivering to homeless youth in our area in early June. Some are crocheting the mats, while others are weaving them. Our construction class has built 2 looms for our project. We hope to have at least a dozen sleeping mats to donate to The Refuge in Oshawa by early June.

Reflection & Celebration

It is inspiring to see the students giving up their break to build these mats for others less fortunate than themselves! They are already talking about continuing the project in the fall and they have decided to continue collecting milk bags over the summer so the bags don’t end up in the landfill.

We will be spending an afternoon at The Refuge and will have a chance to hear stories from the homeless youth who choose to meet with us and collect their sleeping mats.
