50 Years, 5 Trees: Growing Together at Centennial Park
Vision
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of our school, we aim to create a sustainable project focused on environmental protection and community involvement. Our vision is to plant five trees at Centennial Park, symbolizing growth, longevity, and solidarity. This project will raise awareness among our students about the importance of local ecosystems, biodiversity, and the care we must take for our planet.
We also want to encourage hands-on outdoor learning: observing the trees, animals, insects, and studying the interactions within the local food chain. This project will highlight the natural richness of the park and foster a sense of belonging for our students to their environment.
Action
Here is our action plan:
Tree Selection: We will select indigenous tree species that are compatible with existing trees at Centennial Park, ensuring that we choose non-invasive species that do not harm the local ecosystem.
Planting: Plant the 5 trees during a collective activity with students, teachers, and community members.
Maintenance:
Each week, for 6 consecutive weeks, students will visit the park to:
Water the trees
Measure their growth (height, diameter) and create weekly graphs to track their development
Assess their health using a specialized mobile application to identify potential diseases and issues
Test the pH and nutrient levels of the soil
Additional Studies:
Conduct a study of the local trees, animals, and insects
Create a food chain diagram based on observations at the park
Documentation: Students will keep a logbook and take photos during each visit.
Reflection & Celebration
At the end of the project:
Create an exhibition in the school showcasing growth graphs, observations, photos, and diagrams made by the students.
Install a commemorative plaque in front of the trees to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school and our community’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Community celebration: Host a small event at the park to inaugurate the trees with families, students, partners, and community members.
Collective reflection: Each student involved will write a brief text about what they have learned, which will be displayed during the exhibition.
