Abbey Park Pollinator Garden

Vision

The project relates to sustainability/climate change by decreasing our footprint, and educating people about the importance of pollinator plants.

The students in the Environmental Council were inspired to take on this issue after attending the Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) youth climate conference at Appleby College.

Action

The action project involves the following actions:
1. growing plants to be shared with the Food and Nutrition and Biology classes
2. Managing pollinator gardern (cleaning, removing weeds, adding mulch, adding signage for pollinator plants)
3. Add plants to the pollinator garden.
3. Starting and maintaining a vermicomposter
4. Making signage for the plants in the pollinator garden to inform the community about what plants are being grown and the importance of pollinators.

Reflection & Celebration

This is important to our community as it encourages environmental learning in a hands-on way. Students who partake in the growing of our pollinator plants and herbs in our indoor garden have been able to appreciate the value of sustainable growing practices and the importance of preserving native species. Through this initiative, students have also been able to collaborate with the broader community by selling the plans they have grown and by enlisting the help of Oakville Green, our local conservation organization.
