Accessiblity of Nutritious Foods & Food Waste
Vision
Our vision is to recognize that food insecurity and accessibility is happening in our province and is not only a third world country issue. We explored this through looking at pricing of food in communties in Arctic Canada and Labrador and compared them to prices on the island and in other countries.
We then moved into the conversation of what we can do in our community to reduce waste in landfills/repurpose waste and encourage people to grow their own foods. Talked about composting within the school and donating compost to families who use the community garden.
Action
– Got a SucSeed Bin (talked about SucSeed and their company mission of reducing access to healthier foods in climates that don’t necessarily have the greatest growing system). Used and managed SucSeed Bin.
Next Steps:
– Get a Lomi
– Learn more about composting as a class.
– Next year set it up in the elementary wing for students to throw their scraps in.
– Donate compost to community for families in the community to use in their own garden and at the community garden.
Reflection & Celebration
Kids were engaged and took accountability for this task. Student led and they were excited to have these discussions.
