Action Project #AP-10896
Vision
Joanna Olek, Lynne Oliphant, Chrystal Roncato, and students from various grades.
We are an environmental club that is working towards reducing our carbon footprint through greening initiatives, promoting initiatives that help eliminate single-use plastics at school, running a school recycling program, conducting weekly energy checks to ensure lights and devices are turned off when not in use, creating hospitable animal habitats and homes for wildlife, and planting pollinator gardens just to name a few of our initiatives. We also educate the school community on the importance of reducing our carbon footprint through announcements, posters, and school newsletter.
Action
As the world’s food supply depends on pollinators, we will be planting a pollinator garden with varieties of native plants and flower shapes to attract different types of pollinators with the plan of adding bird baths and bee houses to keep insects and birds returning each year. A pollinator habitat can increase native biodiversity, pollination, and biological control of “pest” insects. In this regard, we will also be providing learning opportunities to students and the school community about the importance of a pollinator garden and planting native plants.
Reflection & Celebration
The students, staff, and community regularly gather around the pollinator garden to admire the plants and pollinator friendly objects. The garden has started to flourish through a multitude of native plants, as well as a bird bath and bee cups for thirsty pollinators.
