Aero Garden
Vision
Our class lives in Yellowknife NT. In the North we have little access to fresh produce during the winter seasons as they are long (8-9 months of the year) and dark. Students and families in the North often have to rely of semi trucks bringing food long distances to access fresh produce and herbs. Our class asked for funds to purchase a few Aero-Gardens to allow students to experience growing their own fresh produce and sharing it with their families. We wanted to create a sustainable and accessible method of getting fresh produce !
Action
We set up our Aero Gardens and got to work! Students grew mint, basil, dill, spinach, different varieties of lettuce and greens and created delicious recipes with them (pesto, mint tea, BLTs) and enjoyed the fact that they themselves can live a life where they are able to access and grow their own foods. This was a wonderful and tasty experience for everyone involved !
Reflection & Celebration
Students shared, ate and talked with their parents, friends and siblings on how much better the produce tasted and how easy it was to manage and access. Students especially loved sharing their recipes, and creations with their peers and families!
