Avonmore Elementary School Garden Project
Vision
Avonmore Elementary School is looking to expand our garden projects this school year. We currently partner with our local community food share program to donate harvested produce from our school gardens, which are grown by students, to help feed community members in need. This initiative was inspired by students who noticed a lack of food share programs in our area. Additionally, our students are exploring ways to promote sustainable living, and the garden projects align with this goal. They are learning that growing our own food can help minimize environmental impact by reducing the number of trips needed to the grocery store.
Action
This year, we introduced two new garden beds in our schoolyard. Students took initiative by planting vegetables in these beds, which will soon yield produce. Additionally, they continued their efforts at our local community gardens, where they planted a total of 75 plants. We introduced a water barrel next to these garden beds for easy access to water as well as a compost bin to take better action on waste reduction and to feed our garden our very own school made compost!
Reflection & Celebration
Originally, our vision was to introduce a greenhouse on our school property. Unfortunately, we encountered many roadblocks, which led to a great deal of reflection. However, our greenhouse vision is not over. We are now exploring alternative ways to bring this educational initiative to our school in alignment with our school board’s policies. In the meantime, we continue to celebrate the small wins from our garden project, which is making a significant impact in our community by addressing food scarcity and promoting a sustainable future.
