AVPS Pollinator Garden

Vision

We wanted to care for and expand our pollinator garden, and add new signage to ensure that it was not only a space to support biodiversity, but also to support learning in our school and community.

Action

We purchased 19 new pollinator plants and had Gr. 4 & Gr. 8 students prep the garden, do some weeding, turn the soil, and then plant and stake the new plants. Then, our Gr. 4 students researched, designed and are having metal signs printed to showcase which plants were put into the garden, which pollinators they support, and to explain some of the benefits of our pollinator garden.

Reflection & Celebration

It has been an awesome project that we were able to take on with the additional funding from LSF this year! We had students picking up shovels and getting their hands into the earth who have never done so before. We have kids engaged in conversations about the importance of supporting biodiversity and pollinators. We have launched both Gr. 4 & Intermediate projects on environmental concerns and the UN SDGs following the day of planting and garden care – because the students are interested and they are asking to learn more. It has been an amazing project!
