Beverage Container Recycling at PTC

Vision

Our vision is a school community where sustainability is driven by student voice and the Six Cs. Through critical thinking, collaboration, and creative problem-solving, we aim to reduce waste, build responsible habits, and model global citizenship. By taking action, we connect with our values and lead positive change, one recyclable at a time.

Action

Our Action Project aimed to improve beverage container recycling within our school community. Led by our student environmental club, the Terra Titans, we responded to a growing concern: despite existing recycling bins in common areas, many beverage containers were still ending up in the garbage. Students identified contamination issues and inconsistencies in recycling practices, which inspired them to take action with a solution that was both practical and sustainable.
To address this, we purchased 27 dedicated recycling bins, placing them strategically in classrooms and focusing specifically on beverage containers. This decision was intentional as beverage containers are less prone to contamination than paper products, increasing the likelihood that they would be properly recycled. While teachers were welcome to use the bins for paper recycling, they were responsible for managing the collection and transportation of paper to larger receptacles in staff workrooms. By concentrating on a single waste stream, we increased the chances that recyclables would avoid ending up in the landfill.
Students in the Terra Titans recycling club collected empty and recyclable beverage containers weekly from these 27 classrooms to ensure that the recyclables were uncontaminated and weren’t inadvertably sent to the landfill.

Reflection & Celebration

Reflecting on our beverage container recycling project, we are proud of what our school community, led by the Terra Titans environmental club, has accomplished. What began as a response to overflowing garbage bins became an example of student-led change grounded in the Six Cs. Students used critical thinking to identify gaps in our recycling system, collaborated across classrooms and staff roles, and communicated their message through videos, announcements, and presentations. Their creativity and commitment not only reduced waste but also fostered a stronger sense of citizenship and connection to the environment within our growing school. Even the challenges, like navigating custodial routines and union limitations, became opportunities for learning, patience, and perseverance.
This project has laid the foundation for a culture of sustainability built on action and shared responsibility. We celebrate the leadership shown by our students, and the growing awareness among staff and the rest of the student population. As we look ahead, we’re
