Beyond the BBQ: the Conservation Caravan Initiative

Vision

Operation Grassland Community envisions a sustainable prairie landscape where communities thrive, diverse interests are balanced, and wildlife and their habitats are in abundance. We are achieving this vision step by step, collaborating with prairie stakeholders and landowners in Alberta to conserve and enhance prairie habitats, while supporting diverse socio-economic interests.

Action

In recent years, there has been a rise in demand for sustainable food production. However, most of the urban consumers purchasing these products (whether at the farmers market and/or the average grocery store) are unaware of what it takes to be sustainable, so OGC set out to tackle that imbalance through the film and public outreach opportunities.

The Conservation Caravan film reaches beyond rural fence-lines to tell this story of stewardship to the urban consumer. Through a ranch-to-ranch roadtrip, viewers learn the connections between ranching, habitat, food production, and wildlife in Alberta’s southeastern grassland region. The Conservation Caravan aims to better educate the consumer about how THEY are also part of a sustainable grassland ecosystem.
