Biodiversity Garden

Vision

Our vision was to create more biodiversity on our school grounds. Plant and learn about local plants and their traditional Indigenous uses. Create a plant for pollinators and other insects.

Action

We learned about the benefits of local Indigenous plants. We started by learning about the benefits of planting and growing local plants to the area. We discussed the benefits of insects and other pollinators and how these ecosystems are beneficial. Students chose a local Indigenous plant to research its traditional uses. Students created a poster to share this information with our school community. Students then got to plant the plant in the garden and mulch the plant and take care of the plant while it became established. This will provide an opportunity for students to take a positive action in helping our local environment. This is beneficial as many students don’t have gardens at home so this provides a connection to nature which promotes them wanting to be stewards of our environment. We will involve parent and guardian volunteers to continue to look after our garden. We have a sitting area in our garden where we can hold lessons and teach about these local Indigenous plants.

Reflection & Celebration

We continue to learn about the local plants and their role in the ecosystem. We utilise this garden for place based learning and continue to look after the plants in the coming years.
