Birds, Butterflies and Bees, YES PLEASE!
Vision
Our Vision is to create students with a love of the earth and the creatures upon it. We hope that this will instill a sense of environmental responsibility. We have a beautiful space at our school in which most students engage weekly in Outdoor Education. We are working together as a team to build teacher capacity for outdoor education experiences for our students. We ask students to help with the maintenance and care of this space, as well as our nearby forested park, to make it beautiful for our learning, and to welcome pollinators and other creatures.
Action
APRIL:
-Planted indoor gardens and hydroponics garden (Grades K, 2,3,4).
-Grade 4 and 5 students did a invasive species pull in our Habitat Garden with the Credit Valley Conservation area staff, and Georgetown District High School Students.
-Entire school took part in cleaning up garbage for the afternoon in our school outdoor area (K students) and older students (Gr. 1-5) hiked to nearby Cedarvale Park together to clean up the forest.
MAY:
-Halton Environmental Network came in to teach Grades 3,4 about soils, and K and 1 about worms. We then created a vermicompost and will use the castings to fertilize our vegetable gardens.
-Grade One students are weeding and caring for our pollinator garden beds, and Kindergarten students will transplant our tomatoes. care for our strawberries as well as plant pumpkins, sunflowers and carrots.
Reflection & Celebration
It has been wonderful continuing to involve the students in the maintenance of our outdoor learning spaces! They are full of such pride! A new learning has been planting our indoor gardens this year and creating our vermicompost. The students are 100% engaged and students are now excited about gardening in their own homes- growing their own food!
