Birds of A Feather
Vision
The Eco Team at Hillcrest set out to design an eco-friendly project that would positively impact both the school and the wider community. After exploring various possibilities, the team envisioned a vibrant, artistic initiative that would: Enhance the school grounds with eye-catching installations, Support local biodiversity by creating new habitats for birds, Engage all students in a creative and educational experience, Connect the project to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those focused on the environment, education, and well-being.
Action
To bring this vision to life, the Eco Team used grant funding to launch the Birds of a Feather Project—a creative, hands-on initiative designed to engage students in environmental stewardship. As part of the project, students took ownership of the process from start to finish. They went store to store, comparing prices and quality to source the best deals on birdhouses and feeders, demonstrating both initiative and financial literacy. In addition, they made environmentally conscious choices by selecting non-toxic, eco-friendly paints and water-based Varathane to ensure their creations were safe for wildlife.
Each class was invited to decorate a bird feeder or house using their own unique design, resulting in imaginative pieces ranging from whimsical Alice in Wonderland themes to bold geometric patterns and even fingerprint art that represented every student’s touch. Students also researched what materials to fill the birdhouses with and learned about the types of birds native to the area, ensuring the habitats would be both attractive and suitable.
Through this project, students discovered how supporting local bird populations positively impacts ecosystems by aiding in pollination, pest control, and seed dispersal. The finished feeders were installed along the school’s front gate, creating a warm, welcoming, and functional display for students, visitors, and birds alike. This initiative fostered creativity, community spirit, and a deeper understanding of biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability in action.
Reflection & Celebration
The project had meaningful outcomes: The front of the school now bursts with color, showcasing student pride and creativity. Students have observed birds using the feeders—proving that even small efforts can make a real difference in supporting urban wildlife.
The project advanced multiple SDGs: SDG 15: Life on Land – Supported urban biodiversity, SDG 4: Quality Education – Fostered hands-on, cross-grade learning, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Helped create a greener school environment, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – Promoted mental wellness through nature and creativity. SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – The whole-school approach. SDG 13: Climate Action – By supporting biodiversity and creating green spaces.
The Hillcrest community celebrates the care, collaboration, and impact of this project—and hopes it will inspire others to take small, meaningful steps toward a more sustainable and joyful world for all living things.
