Butterfly Garden
Vision
Our vision was to create a butterfly garden, using native species to help protect the endangered monarch butterfly. The garden would provide a natural learning environment for all grades to learn about plants, soil, changing seasons, wildlife and the life cycle of a butterfly.
Action
We chose a site that was accessible for all classes to use as an outdoor learning area. We researched plants that attract butterflies and that were native species to our area. We chose a variety of plants so that there would be flowers from spring to fall to provide nutrients over the three seasons. We prepared the garden by removing the sod and adding soil and nutrients. We planted and watered the plants. We released the butterflies that the FDK classes had raised. We will now make observations to see if we have made a difference!
