Carpenter High School Vermicompost Project
Vision
Carpenter High School’s Foods 10 and 30 classes utilize grow lights and a garden tower to grow food in the classroom. Carpenter also has outdoor raised garden beds. Our Foods 10 and 30 classes generate a large amount of organic waste that ends up in the landfill.
Action
As a way to reduce the organic waste that ends up in the landfill, our Foods 10 and 30 classes maintain a vermicompost. The compost humus and compost tea from the vermicompost is added to the existing garden tower and outdoor garden beds, which adds rich nutrients and enzymes to the existing soil.
Reflection & Celebration
Carpenter High School’s vermicompost has been successful! In a couple of short months, we have diverted 15 pounds of organic waste from the landfill!
