Chatelech Secondary Garden Creation
Vision
This is merely the beginning. Our school is building/repurposing an underused grass area in between buildings. We have no gardens at the secondary school and hope to build more opportunities to learn from the land.
This garden area will be fenced and filled with 6 cedar beds. The hope is to build off this momentum and create multiple settings, along with more outdoors learning areas.
Action
We have partnered with GBS (Gibsons Building Supplies) and Salish Soils in Sechelt. These two companies have donated lumber, soil, underlay, and the tools and supplies to get everything set up.
My ‘Sustainability 8’ class has been doing the labour and planning with the garden. With the expansion of the Sustainability elective course, our Sustainability Committee, and Leadership crew, there’s much to look forward to heading into next school year.
Reflection & Celebration
This is a much-needed project to address at this school. We have some wonderful programs at our school on the Sunshine Coast that is geared towards trades work, automotive, metalwork, and carpentry. However, we have little to no educational infrastructure geared towards agriculture and land stewardship. The support from LSF and others has been immense. We are grateful and hopeful that the seeds have been planted.
