Community Closet
Vision
Our vision was to use the UNSDG’s to create an impactful initiative for our School community by creating a sustainable community closet for staff, students and whole school community.
Action
The community closet at Elsie MacGill was vital to us because it provides essential clothing to students and families in need. It demonstrates how our school cares about students well-being and fosters a sense of support within our school community. By setting up and maintaining a closet it can involve students, parents and teachers to promote the sense of belonging, and mutual support. Our club organized this project, found a spare room which we cleaned and organized, this allowed our building team to get started on shelving and providing space. Then, we started sorting clothing by size and type to create a system where students could access clothing discreetly and comfortably. It will be a regular donation box in the library, where students can participate in organizing and maintenance. Our main goal is to provide essential clothing to students at Elsie MacGill to ensure everyone feels confident and comfortable when learning. It will encourage a more inclusive and equal environment among students, and reduce visible economic inequality. The community closet will be using the closet to promote recycling and reuse of clothing, it is environmentally friendly, and can help students thrive in our school environment. This project will strengthen our school community and establish an environment by fostering inclusion, support and environment.
Reflection & Celebration
Students are very excited to get this initiative moving in September. They used this funding to support their vision and create opportunities for our school community. Students have started collecting donations, building the closet, and advertising. There have been groups that have divided roles catered to their strengths and are excited to continue and create something great for the school. There are students planning on doing a project based co-op next year to continue this outreach opportunity. This will not only provide valuable learning opportunities in business, project management, and NGO’s but will allow students in the project and in the greater school community to understand sustainable fashion and equity issues in our community. We foresee lots of future projects connected to this within our school connected to the UNSDG’s that so many of our courses, subject areas and school initiatives surround.
We look forward to having many great future opportunities to celebrate with our students and communities.
