Community Herb Garden
Vision
Oodenawi- our school name, means “community” in Anishinabemowin. The vision of our project is to foster community by having a community herb garden on site. We encourage the community to take herb cuttings and use it in their cooking with their families.
Action
Our Eco Team revitalized the school grounds by planting a variety of herbs in our community garden, based on feedback from a survey of the school community. We planted mint, basil, rosemary, oregano, and parsley. Volunteers will help maintain the garden throughout the summer, and we encourage the community to take herb cuttings for use in their cooking. This initiative supports Goal 2: Zero Hunger by promoting the use of fresh, locally grown herbs in family meals.
Reflection & Celebration
As our herb garden thrives, we aim to teach students essential gardening skills, such as pruning and propagating. This garden offers a valuable opportunity to explore herbs and the process of propagating cuttings. Additionally, we hope to use it as a platform to educate students on reducing food waste through plant propagation in the future.
