Compost to Harvest Bins

Vision

Our vision is to engage the student population in our plan to eliminate food waste, generate compost, contribute to vegetable production, support pollinators, and build values of sustainability within our school community

Action

We will engage students and staff through our Foods classes and collect food scraps to prevent waste going to the land fill. We bought two large bin composters where we will convert the scraps to compost. The compost will be used to enrich the soil we bought to start our school garden boxes. The garden boxes will grow vegetables to be used by our school community. The gardens will also support polinators. This project will run through the Foods classes where part of the education outcomes will be consideration for waste and sustainable ways to minimize waste. The contribution of the compost to the gardens will help engage students in learning to grow their own food, minimzing reliance on produce brought to us through vast supply chains. This project can be expanded to include waste collection from lunch time, once we are confident we have established a culture of respect for the process throught the foods classes.

Reflection & Celebration

Our project is emphasising sustainablity and will be fully implemented in the new school year. The remaining weeks of this year are dedicated to putting systems and supports in place so this project might be successful and continue long after the initial students have graduated. This spring we helped with the garden boxes and have met with foods teachers to get their input on how we can best implement classroom routines to support the program and their curriculum. We plan to begin full-scale composting in September and are excited to help begin conversations about sustainability.
