Vision

Introduction of waste sorting and composting at our school. This project was implemented to encourage and offer incentive to students to start sorting their waste so it can be computed leaving our school producing less waste that goes to the landfill. This introductory activity will hopefully lead to school wide composting and waste sorting on a weekly regular basis. By starting just on Wednesdays for the first stages we will be able to tack and record the amount of waste that needs to be composted to ensure our school has the proper equipment to compost the amount of compostable waste produced and collected.

Action

Waste Sorting Wednesdays at DRHS!

DRHS has purchased an electronic composter and has started a waste sorting Wednesday school wide initiative to ease into the composting world. On Wednesdays at DRHS we have green bins placed around our school and have created an incentive program that rewards those who are “caught in the act” of sorting their waste. The Climate crew at DRHS will then take the compostable waste and run it through our electronic composter on a weekly basis, creating compost that can be used for our future planting needs. Part of this project was the creation of advertisement for Waste Sorting Wednesdays which includes a flyer and posters for around the school.

Reflection & Celebration

After running the program for only 1 week, we did not collect as much compostable waste as anticipated but it gives the condor climate crew something to work towards. More advertisement will be created and shared and we are hopeful that in the weeks to come more students will be comfortable in sorting their wast appropriately. This is a learning process for all of our students and we want them to ease into composting so it is not overwhelming. We will be celebrating those who have contributed to the waste sorting by offering Tim Hortons gift cards to those who were caught in the act of sorting their waste for the next few weeks. The winners will be announced via our morning announcements, which will hopefully encourage others to follow in their footsteps.
