Courtland Avenue S.P.S. School Yard Greening Pollinator Habitat Project
Vision
Our vision is to increase pollinator habitat and provide more shade opportunities for our students on our school yard. As Courtland Avenue is located in the heart of downtown Kitchener, our goal was to plant as many trees as possible to help reduce the urban heat island effects that impact our students when on Nutrition Break.
Action
School Yard Greening Pollinator / Shade Tree Project: Our students were keen on supporting native pollinator habitat and since our field was in such poor shape they decided to reseed with white clover and native grass seed varities, in order to support native pollinators be more drought tolerant and require less maintennance. As well, we planted three native trees (1 Tulip tree & 2 Red Oaks) to increase shade on our property and provide habitat to brids and pollinator species. As well, we planted Red Swamp Milkweed, New England Aster and Dense Blazing Star seeds in order to grow new seedlings for our Butterfly Way Native Pollinator garden. In addition, gardening gloves, yard waste bags and a watering can were purchased to facilitate this project.
