Creating an Eco-Team for our School
Vision
We wanted to create an Eco-Team for our school to support the learning of the 17 SDG United Nation Goals. After visiting the Youth Climate Action Presentation in the Fall of 2024 we were inspired with many ideas that might take more time (such as a bike rack being installed). We thought if we created an Eco-Team first and used our money to buy resources that we need to spread the word such as t-shirts, stickers, library books, we could help teach our whole school about the 17 Goals. We were hopeful to hit many of our goals in our action plan.
Action
We used our money to buy a Cricut Maker in order to make t-shirts and create an Alexandra Eco-Team. As an eco-team, we wore our shirts and we decided to create a plan with the Grade 6/7 Class and a Grade 7/8 Class. We created posters, stickers, and bags to support our eco-team. Students who attended the Youth Climate Action Change all recieved a green shirt and also were responsible for ironing their vinyl onto their t-shirt. We researched the 17 UN Goals and the two classes broke into 17 groups (each group focused on 1 goal) and made a powerpoint to present to younger classes in the school. In the spring, each group will be going to a younger class to read a picture book (we purchased 17 new picture books that are recommended by the UN website that relate to the UN Goals) that directly correlates with their goal. We will also be doing a small activity with each group to teach them about the SDG’s. This way we can always have the picture books in our library for all members of our school to look at. We hope that spreading the word about the SDG’s with our t-shirts, stickers, posters, bags, and books will be a helpful way for our school community to get more involved in climate action projects. We are excited that the $500 allowed us to create an eco-team and helped us learn more about the SDGs. We are excited that our eco-team can meet every week and share future ideas for our school that would support the climate.
Our eco-team went to Owen Sound Oshare to collect food and we were able to have a bin of food to create a soup with local foods. We discussed how this was reaching the No Hunger Goal. We worked with the Chef’s Club in our school to discuss how Oshare works in our community. We borrowed aprons and cooking utensils from Chef’s Club as well. We were able to share the soup with the Grade 6/7 Class and the 7/8 Class.
Our eco-team led a commuity clean up during earth week and inspired a recycled art project that the whole school is taking part in. We also have used the cricut machine to cut out and laminate all 17 UN Goals and put them up around the school. We have worked closely with other groups in the school such as the nature club to discuss the potential of introducing spring hikes around the community and more community clean ups.
