Cucumber Crew

Vision

Our vision for Canada is to educate people about how many fruits and vegetables get wasted in grocery stores, on farms, and in homes. We did this because we wanted to encourage people to grow their own plants at home. We chose to base our research around cucumbers. Large planting industries use a lot of water because of inefficient watering tools. We answered different questions like: how much water does it take to grow a cucumber? How many cucumbers are produced annually? and how many cucumbers are wasted annually? The research we found led us to our action.

Action

We made a PowerPoint that we presented to Grade 6 classes in our school and made posters that we put up around our school to educate students about this problem. We also grew several cucumber plants that we gave to classes in our school so that they could grow together. Students received a plant if they won our Kahoot game which had questions about our presentation.

Reflection & Celebration

We found it challenging to find accurate information about cucumber growing on a large scale. We found it rewarding to plant the cucumbers as well as name our cucumber mascot Billy. We enjoyed talking to the grade six students while doing our presentations.

On June 1st, 2023, our school is having an Open House in the evening for our school community. We will have our Action Project on display on a poster board. We will play our video on a laptop for people to watch. We will continue to educate our classmates by inviting them to watch our video.
