De-influencing Fast Fashion

Vision

My project is driven by a vision to challenge the environmental harm caused by the fast fashion industry and inspire a shift toward sustainable, mindful clothing practices. Over the past year, I have learned about the damaging impact of profit-driven fashion corporations. Specifically their contribution to carbon emissions, overproduction, and the release of microplastics from synthetic fabrics like polyester. Fast fashion thrives on rapidly changing microtrends, producing garments that are quickly discarded and often end up in landfills, where they can take centuries to decompose. This cycle harms the planet and promotes a culture of waste.

Action

The action I will take on for my project aims to disrupt this cycle by upcycling old clothes into fresh, creative pieces that celebrate individuality and environmental responsibility. By repurposing used and loved garments. For example, turning old jeans into mini skirts. I hope to divert waste from landfills and encourage others, especially my friends and family, to mend, redesign, and personalize their clothing. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also shifts fashion as a form of self-expression that doesn’t come at the planet’s expense.

Reflection & Celebration

This project has taught me the value of resourcefulness and new skills to be able to design from creating a new life from something old. Although I haven’t started sewing yet, the planning and preparation have given me a strong foundation for the work I’ll begin over summer break. Most importantly, I’ve seen how upcycling can influence others. how one small effort can create conversation, inspire action, and begin a larger movement toward sustainable fashion. This experience has upped my passion for design with purpose and shown me that change can start with something as simple as a sewing machine, thread, and a worn-out pair of jeans.
