EMP Sustainable Future
Vision
Our vision is to develop a whole-school culture of sustainability by engaging all students in meaningful learning experiences that build knowledge, skills, and values for caring for the environment and making responsible choices for a sustainable future.
Action
We had many difficulties getting anything approved, so we really had to be creative about how we spent our grant! We are very excited to announce the newest additions to our school community. First, we have added bat homes and bird houses. The student thinking on this would be to get different types of birds in our Kindergarten Park a home and an opportunity for students to bird watch, potentially seeing some endangered species. We also wanted some bat homes to control the spider population living all over the outside of our portables. We also already had a composting program up and running and just this year added a food cycler to break down some of our compost but nothing has been done with the amazing fertilizer that has been produced. So, as a part of our budget we purchased fresh soil and totes to mix the fertilizer and now that the weather is nice, we will be adding the fertilized soil to our already existing gardens. Lastly, we are in the process of finishing and building a little library for the front of our school yard. Our school is directly located across from low-income housing, and we wanted to provide access to books and reading for more people in our community.
Reflection & Celebration
This year, our journey toward sustainable living was filled with unexpected challenges, especially when it came to approvals and funding use. But these roadblocks only pushed us to become more resourceful, creative, and committed to our vision of environmental stewardship. We’re proud to celebrate the meaningful and lasting additions to our school community—all made possible through teamwork, innovation, and student-led thinking.
