Environmental Club

Vision

To engage our school members in environmental issues that involve our school & school community.
To blend the required curriculum with environmental sustainability projects our club decides to take on, we can incorporate class projects with our school garden, with our community greenhouse and more. We are looking to grow even more in the future with steps to move into the community garden (attached to our school grounds), to create a compost initiative, bigger and better recycling promises and overall to promote sustainable actions within our school and at home.

This year we stuck with grade 6s, next year we want to include ALL the elementary grades and start a Junior High Club as well!

Action

We started small this year with recycling, a welcome garden and getting trees for a legacy foundation. The garden will be full on perennials that will grow and return year after year on our school ground. The colours represent our school yellow & purple!

The trees are for the grade 9s who finish at Brookside Intermediate this year who are moving on to another town and high school. The legacy garden is something sustainable they leave behind to remember them & make our school grounds more inviting to the insects that surround us (we are a new school situated around a bog area).

We are looking for ways to bring aspects of good health and well-being into our Club’s projects that also tie in sustainability and growth. We want to involve our student population and school community with partnerships from our local town councils and sponsorships to help us promote climate action, responsible consumption, healthier living and environmental education 🙂

Reflection & Celebration

This is the first year to have an Environmental Club here at our school, we look forward to growing! Covid-19 protocols have certainly limited our mixing of cohorts but the groups have come together and shown that they are committed to the club & our vision of becoming a green school that promotes sustainability in every way we can.

We can’t wait to come back next year with more members, bigger projects & more sustainable education 🙂
