Feed The Bees

Vision

We wanted to beautify our courtyard at the front of our school. Our Environmental Issues Club last year began adding bulbs and cuttings from hostas from their gardens at home to develop a garden in this area. Mr. Hartwig’s Grade 4/5 class decided that they wanted to make the garden better, and plant plants that will help the bees. We applied for the grant and were approved to create a pollinator garden.

Action

The class researched what plants were great for pollinators and went shopping to purchased the plants at local garden centres, once they opened for the season. The students weeded the gardens and began planing. The students added sheep manure to the soil to add nutrients to make the plants grow strong and students have been watering them each day to ensure the plants have enough water.

Reflection & Celebration

Since the plants were planted, the bees have been visiting each day! The students check on the garden daily and water them regularly. Students throughout the school have notices the beautiful garden additions and have commented on how beautiful our courtyard now looks. Students are making plans on what to add to our garden in the upcoming school year!
