Food Forest & Edible Garden
Vision
Our students received a funding grant of $500 from LSF to purchase fruit trees and shrubs along with raspberry and black berry canes. Our mission was to develop and demonstrate how to create a sustainable food source locally that does not rely long transportation distances. Living in Newfoundland, many of our fruits and vegetables are transported from the United States and Mexico. Our students identified this an environmental concern when we can grow many of these products locally.
Action
We planted fruit trees and shrubs in addition to a greenhouse we built a year prior.
Reflection & Celebration
Students are learning how to grow their own food, demonstrating an understanding of sustainability and environmentalism. We now have students involved in this project that otherwise would not be engaged in any school activities.
