Food Security & Sustainability

Vision

Our vision is to create a school garden to support school-based meals, provide tangible food/agriculture skills and reduce carbon emissions through on-site composting and community connections.

Action

We are in the process of initiating a garden to support our school’s/community’s need for nutritious foods and to educate about the impacts of food (production, consumption) on our climate. We have created a worm bin to support nutrient quality of our soil and to reduce food waste. This bin was supplemented by the creation of educational posters which students presented to classes to initiate conversation around the importance/benefits of composting and how they could play a role. To accelerate seed germination, we have up-cycled an old bookshelf into a grow light station and are currently planting local seeds for transplant into pre-existing raised garden beds at school and at a community organization, the North grove located just down the street. We have also planted seeds in our aero-garden to ensure fresh access to greens all year round. Over the coming months, we are excited to see the fruits of our work and to share the abundance of local foods with the school community.

Reflection & Celebration

We realized how much food waste was accumulated at school! During our Thursday hot lunch, we are able to top off the worm bin and reduce waste by 50%.

As our seedlings germinate and vegetables begin to grow, we plan to host a farm-to-table school snack week to allow everyone the chance to enjoy local produce and feel connected with the land and our community.
