Food Waste Reduction Project
Vision
Reduce our school’s food waste through an expanded school wide composting, vermicomposting, and gardening program.
Action
We expanded our pilot composting project to include vermicomposting and a foodcycler. The vermicomposter uses
red wiggler worms to compost plant waste from our cafeteria, cafeteria servery, culinary classes, and offices. The
foodcycler grinds and baked food waste from these same sources, creating a soil additive that we compost in a
traditional composting barrel. The compost is used in our school’s vegetable and flower gardens, four medicine
gardens, and lawns.
Reflection & Celebration
We compost about 2lbs of food waste a day through three main techniques: vermicomposting, electric foodcycler, and traditional composting.
