Gander Collegiate, Planting Seeds for Change
Vision
We wanted our students to think of small steps they could take to make big changes in their school and community. We aimed to plant seeds to grow our own food to demonstrate how we could become more sustainable, use less packaging, reduce our water consumption and recycle materials that would otherwise go into landfills.
Action
We built a greenhouse behind our school and planted a variety of crops. We installed a rain barrel to use to collect water so we didn’t have to use the town water supply to water our greenhouse. We cleaned up the area around the school and began to collect plastics such as bottle caps to recycle and reuse in our greenhouse.
