Garden Club Composting

Vision

To develop edible gardens with nutrient rich soils that will encourage life-long skills and knowledge for our students in helping them move towards a more environmentally sustainable future.

Action

Materials were purchased with funds from EcoLeague Fund to build three rotating composting bins. Terra Nova Foods Ltd. supplied us with beef buckets to collect organic material in the school. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 the school year was cut short and since reopening in September 2020 we have been unable to place bins or collect organic material due to strict health regulations. MMSB have visited the school prior to Covid-19 to teach the grade four students the importance of composting and the science behind it. Our hope is that we will be able to begin our program in the Spring of 2021. Having the bins ready and program organized will allow us to begin our program quickly and seamlessly once given the go ahead.

Reflection & Celebration

Once we begin to collect organic material within the school we will be able to celebrate with a relaunch of our garden club. Our grade four ambassadors will be able to visit the other classrooms to teach the other grades about composting, as well as, run the program under teacher supervision. We are committed to this program and are eager to begin when it is safe to do so.
