Action
Salad Club – Sprouting and creating salads
The Salad Club was led by the Eco Student Leaders. The salad club leaders led and facilitated the salad clubs and salad picnic parties.
The goal is to bring an awareness about healthy eating and healthy hydration. If students are provided with good choices, and they’ll make good choices! A salad club at school means students have the the choice of fresh vegetables and fruit for lunch. It will provide opportunities for learning and further conversations around healthy eating and healthy hydration. When children are with peers, choosing together, chances are that they will also eat those vegetables. There are many families that are new to the area and having a salad club at the school means more exposure, more awareness and amore access to children and their families.
Education and Awareness – Region of Peel, as. a partner supported us with education and resources. Education around Healthy Eating and Healthy Hydration was delivered through workshops, games and hands on activities by the Public Health Nurse from the Region of Peel. They also provided teachers with grade level lesson plans and resources.
Growing own vegetables and fruits in the school garden Eco Source provided us with some funding for the soil top up and some seeds to further develop our vegetable garden. The various classes within the school will be taking care of the school gardens. We are hoping to use gardening as a means to engage students across all grade levels. It will not only create an interest among students but also change some eating habits and develop healthy nutrition habits.
Action:
Eco Club Members planned what they would like to grow in the school garden. They created maps and brainstormed choices.
Our Garden Mentor from Sheridan Nurseries talked about plants that grow well in the location where the garden is and complimentary partner plants
Students with special needs planted seeds indoors and started growing seedlings. They learnt how to care for the seedlings indoors.
Grades 4 and 5 students weeded and turned the soil in the beds getting the beds ready for planting. We also purchased 4 new smaller garden beds and they are also being prepared for planting pumpkins and fruits. For the last 2 years, we only grew vegetables in our school garden. This is the first year, we will be growing fruits. The various classes within the school will be taking care of the school gardens. We are hoping to use gardening as a means to engage students across all grade levels.
During the summer months, we have invited our students, parents and community to help take care of the gardens and also harvest the fruits and vegetables to benefit from the fresh produce. We will be recruiting during our Spring Open House and Concert day on May 30th and also during our End of the Year Talent Show Day on June 12th.
We will be having Parent Workshops by the Public Health Nurse on Our Spring Concert and Open House Day, May 30th.
