Growing the Good at PTC

Vision

Collaborate with grade 7learning buddies from the K-8 school next door to learn about gardening and sustainable food systems.

Action

Grade 7 students at Bison Run worked with grade 11 students at Pembina Trails Collegiate on a gardening and ecology project together. Using a variety of planting methods (tower garden and a Mars Hydro grow tent), they planted cucumber and pepper seeds to observe the different germination periods of different plants, writing scientific observational notes over multiple weeks to log the growth process. Then, the students learned to transplant their seedlings and learned about growing their own food as a way of supporting food sustainability. They each took home a seedling and were encouraged to care for it over the summer so they could have their own home-grown vegetables!

Reflection & Celebration

The students at PTC had a great time working with their buddies. This was but one of many small projects and collaborations accomplished this school year. Having the opportunity to work outdoors, to learn about plants and to learn about sustainability/food systems and develop experience with our new school’s growing systems (Mars Hydro & Tower Garden) was a joy.
