Haybales & Compost Garden Beds

Vision

Instead of landfilling compostable used paper towels from the classrooms, students decided to use them to make soil and grow food out of them.

Action

Students used local haybales to build terraced garden beds on a slope behind the school and filled these with the used paper towels, then covered them with horse manure. They planted the beds with veggies for an all-school lunch. They also mulched some fruit trees using the extra hay.

Reflection & Celebration

We’ll enjoy the fruits of their labour this June for our all-school & community salad bar lunch! Then, they’ll plant squash seedlings into the beds for pumpkin soup for Halloween, once they’re back in the Fall. We usually get the music going and maybe even break out the bicycle blenders for smoothies for these parties.
