Hebbville Community Garden Project
Vision
To create a community based garden that will facilitate students love of growing local, sustainable produce, which can be shared withn the school and greater Hebbville Community.
Action
To date, three large raised bed gardens have been assembled by students, where they have learned and applied their knowledge of carpentry and hands-on learning in an outdoor environment. The goal for spring is to have a greenhouse purchased and ready for assembly for the spring growing season. Completion of this component of the project would help facilitate whole school engagement in growing vegetables and plants that promote sustainability and promote well being. Once plants are ready for transplant, the goal is to get kids planting! Community members will take responsibility for the gardens during the summer months. They will also be able to reap the benefits of the food grown during the summer. This project will encourage future students from grades 5-9 to get involved in gardening and sourcing sustainable produce for the dinner table. The nature of gardening for food can be very inter-disciplinary and allow for a variety of curricular outcomes to be covered. The focus is on making food affordable, accessible, and sustainable for those around us in the community. The food will also be enjoyed by our own school population.
Reflection & Celebration
Progress is concurrent with the Spring growing season. Students have been hard at work, sharing their ideas and contributing to rejuvenating Hebbville’s central courtyard, while also constructing a greenhouse, and 3 raised bed gardens.
