Help the Chickadees!

Vision

After visiting George C. Reiffel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, my students were deeply moved by the effect of shrinking habitat for the black-capped chickadee. I threw the question ‘how can we help the chickadees?’ back at them and they took off running. The issue of shrinking habitat in our community is important because new housing developments are being built every day and habitats continue to shrink.

Action

My students have decided that they want to build nesting boxes for chickadees and place them around the neighbourhood and at the bird sanctuary. They also want to build bird feeders and fill them with black oil sunflower seeds, the preferred food for chickadees. If the students are successful, our chickadees will be provided with food and shelter despite the fact that their habitat is shrinking.
