Home Grown Cooking
Vision
Our vision was to teach students how to grow their own food at home on a budget. We wanted them to know you don’t need a plot of land to be able to do this, and with a little bit of resources, seeds, and free sunlight, they can grow some fresh food in their kitchen. We also wanted them to know how to use these foods in easy recipes so they were encouraged to both grow and use the fresh food they produced.
Action
We wanted to teach students to micro-garden, so we purchased two micro-gardens to use in our Foods lab. Students learned how to grow fresh veggies, like lettuce, and herbs, like basil, and how to use those in their daily meal preparation.
Reflection & Celebration
Our project is just starting to take off, but students have been very interested to watch their seeds grow. Students were very surprised how quickly they had food they could eat and how much lettuce they could get from a small micro-garden. They were encouraged to try it at home just using a cup, soil, seeds and sunlight. They also learned how to use fresh herbs and were surprised how different the taste was with fresh as opposed to the dried herbs they had been using. It is our belief that students will take this learning into their homes and indirectly impact their family, and continue this practice in the future, directly impacting their own health.
