HP Sustainability Challenge

Vision

Our students were challenged to make our school and/or school community more sustainable. They examined the SDGs related to curricular concepts of grade 9 science and geography courses from a global perspective and then narrowed down to a local perspective. Students examined our school and community and identified ways that we could become more sustainable. Students then had a voice and a choice in identifying an actionable project that they engaged in.

Action

Some student projects are:
– eliminating phantom energy in charging chromebooks
– installing rainbarrels
– solar powered wireless cell phone charges
– indoor hydroponic growing system
– indoor strawberry garden
– reusable cutlery & straws in cafeteria
– organic food composter

Reflection & Celebration

Our students were so engaged in this meaningful work! It was a great cross-curricular project. Our students now see their work reflected in our school and community. We also invited and shared our work with students in grade 7 & 8 at our neighbouring elementary schools.
