Huron Heights Food Forest
Vision
We are developing a 1 acre food forest on our property. We have called this place the “Common Ground” because it is a space where all subjects, ages and cultures can learn how to grow food and appreciate the land. It is our intention to use the space to teach about sustainable and indigenous growing practices using a combination of annual and perennial plants. We are involving as many students and staff as possible in creating this space and want to make this an important pillar in the school culture going forward.
Action
We have already laid the expensive permanent paths and seating and will continue to add complexity to the food forest each year. As shade develops in our overstory we will be able to add, learn and teach about how ecosystems connect and support theselves.
Reflection & Celebration
We already have many fruit trees and berry bushes and have been able to provide some plants and fruit to our staff and students. We are just beginning!
