Indigenous Plant Garden
Vision
A student created foundation planting featuring plants native (and cultivars of) to our area. A feature foundation planting at the front of Lakeview school was filled with weeds and uncared for. Students took the initiative to clean it up and researched native plants that would be suitable for the planting bed. They wanted to replace it with plants that would not only thrive in our area, but that were important sources of medicine and food for the Indigenous peoples of our area.
Action
Students cleaned out the weeds and added more soil. They researched different plants native to our area and learned about the edible parts of the plants and any medicinal uses. Our culture teacher taught students about the plants along the Nuxalk-Carrier Grease trail and students learned the names of the plants in Dakelh. All students were given a blank landscape plan and worked in groups to come up with a planting scheme. Once we had a final plan, all students worked together to plant the new garden. The garden will be used in future years as a teaching tool and will be accessible to all staff and students.
Reflection & Celebration
The hard work of the students will be acknowledged through a permanent plaque which will include the names of all participants, the name of the garden and a local land acknowledgement.
