Indigenous Plant Garden

Vision

Our goal was to provide our students with an understanding and appreciation of local, Indigenous plants. We started this project last year with a visit from a Metis herbalist who walked around our school with us to point out local plants and their traditional uses. We wanted to be able to share this knowledge with the rest of our school by creating our own Indigenous plant school garden.

Action

With the LSF grant, we were able to purchase plants that could be put in a special Indigenous plant garden that the whole school could enjoy. We are in the process of creating signs that will identify each plant with the name and one important fact.

Reflection & Celebration

Our students were thrilled to see our garden fill with plants. As we walk in the forest around our school, students excitedly recognize and identify the plants we put in our garden. Our daily student announcements remind the school to visit and watch our garden grow.
