KDHS Food for Thought – Sustainable Urban Farming project

Vision

To grow local food throughout the year using a variety of indoor hydroponic units. The goal is to teach this northern Ontario community about the benefits of growing food indoors using climate-controlled hydroponic growing to help offset some of the demands for fresh produce.

Action

We have 2 OGarden Smart grow units, 2 NutriTower hydroponic units, 8 AeroGarden hydroponic countertop units and are in the process of receiving a ZipGarden and ZipGrow Education rack. The goal is to continue growing food to be used in the preparation of food served to students at KDHS through the STEP and STARS High Support programs.

Reflection & Celebration

We continue to learn and build upon the previous year’s successes. We look forward to our goal of growing a successive crop of fresh greens, tomatoes and peppers with the funding we received from the LSF grant.
