Leo Hayes High Pollinator Garden
Vision
The students’ vision was to construct a pollinator garden outside our school’s library in the “courtyard” area. They wanted to stimulate our biodiversity with native shrubs/flowers and beautify our outdoor space. Aside from the ecological aspect, they wanted people to gain an appreciation for the outdoors, which in turn creates a wider knowledge and respect for the environment. In the future, they would also like to use the pollinator garden for educational purposes by promoting it with the science teachers here at the school, as well as inviting students from nearby middle and elementary schools to learn about pollinator gardens, bio-diversity, etc.
Action
Students performed each step along the way – brainstorming ideas, researching, designing, choosing plant species, ordering lumber and constructing the garden, and planting the plants.
