Let’s Help the Bees!

Vision

We first learned about bees through Agriculture in the Classroom Farm Tours, and took a great interest in learning more about them. We learned about their importance in agriculture and the environment and we also learned the bee population has been decreasing. As a class who participates in Little Green Thumbs and plants our own veggies, and being from a community where many members plant their own veggie gardens, we wanted to help. We wanted to help the bees so they can be around in our future generations. We decided that planting seeds to grow flowers that the bees would like would help them.

Action

We started reading lots of books and watching educational videos on bees; their lifecycles, how they make honey, their importance for pollinating plants, and their decline in population. We started brainstorming ways we could help the bees. During Education week at school, all students planted seeds to grow flowers for the bees. These flowers were brought home. We decided, we needed more flowers. While at school, we wanted to grow and care for flowers that will also help the bees. We explored the school grounds to find a suitable spot for flowers to grow. We also decided that planting some flowers in pots would be a great idea as we could move them to a new location (the town hall) when school closes for the summer. This will allow not only students and staff to enjoy the flowers and seeing the bees but also allow community members to see the flowers and the bees. Helping the bees is important for our community because we want to see the bee population thrive and grow. We have many community members who grow their own crops and we know how important it is for bees with pollinating plants.

Reflection & Celebration

Students were eager to participate in and excited about this project and getting it started. They showed enthusiasm about learning about the bees and how to care for them and our environment. Students even started planting flowers at home with their parents!

As a class, we are thankful for the support from LSF with enabling us to partake in this project and plan to use LSF in future classroom projects and activities. We plan to be more conscious about the environment and how we can care for it. We learned that bees are our friends and we need to help and protect them!
