Living Wall
Vision
Our vision for building a living wall within our school is rooted in the desire to merge education and ecology while fostering active student engagement. In collaboration with the members of the environment club, we aim to create an indoor green space that serves both as a living laboratory and a source of inspiration. This project will allow students to become familiar with concepts of biodiversity, plant care, and the positive impact of green spaces on our well-being. By participating in the design, installation, and maintenance of the living wall, students will develop practical skills and an increased awareness of environmental issues. Furthermore, this wall will be a visible symbol of our commitment to sustainable development and a calming feature that will enrich our school’s atmosphere.
A living wall helps filter the air by acting as a natural air purifier. The plants in the wall absorb pollutants such as carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter through their leaves and roots. This process not only reduces the levels of harmful substances in the air but also produces fresh oxygen, enhancing the overall air quality. By incorporating a living wall, we create a healthier indoor environment, contributing to the well-being of students and staff.
Action
Our project to build a living wall within the school is the result of two years of hard work and collaboration. To bring this initiative to life, we raised the necessary funds through various fundraising activities, including casual dress days and rain barrel sales. We also applied for grants from the Caisse Populaire, LSF, and the Jane Goodall Foundation, and encouraged our students to seek financial support from local companies. Thanks to these efforts, we were able to hire Vertical Oxygen for the professional installation of the living wall. This project represents a collective commitment to the environment, offering students a practical and educational experience while beautifying our school space with a lasting and living symbol of our dedication to ecology.
Reflection & Celebration
Our living wall project has been a true learning experience for all participants. A few plant species did not survive, which required us, along with the students, to experiment and identify potential issues such as the water pH, the amount of water the plants were receiving, and the type of fertilizer used. The students then had to install new plants, thereby enhancing their understanding of the varied needs of plants. We celebrated our achievement by sharing our project on our social media accounts, where we also thanked the school board for their valuable assistance with logistics. This adventure not only enriched our school environment but also strengthened our spirit of collaboration and commitment to sustainability.
