LSF QAIS – Worm Composter

Vision

Reducing Food Waste & teaching proper composting practices within the school.

Action

Our 5 Empowering Youth for Climate Action participants chose to focus on food waste within the school. After careful discussion, they decided to investigate how food waste is handled within the cafeteria. We toured the kitchen and were given an in-depth explanation of how food is composted in the preparation stage as well as how they manage the unused prepared food. Once we learned that our Sodexo kitchen has won awards for its food waste management, the participants decided to focus on how students handle their food waste. We learned from the kitchen that the school compost bins, accessible to students, are often littered with non-compostable items. The team chose to focus on composting awareness for students through various means.

Posters were prepared to post throughout the school, a presentation was prepared for our Middle School/Senior School General Assembly, and a worm composter was purchased for the school cafeteria.

Reflection & Celebration

Through the means above, our QAIS Sustainability Project girls will make an impact on how the students in their school view composting. With their posters and presentation, they provide education on how to use compost correctly, solving an ongoing issue in the school and improving the future of LCC’s composting initiative. With the purchase of the worm composter, they provide a tangible lesson in proper composting. open the minds of students to different ways of composting, and encourage increased composting by giving the school pet worms to care for who will provide enriched compost for LCC’s various gardening projects.
