McKenzie Milkweed Project
Vision
To educate students about the monarch butterflies in the community. 80% of the monarch butterflies did not make it to Canada this past year because of habitat loss along it’s migratory path. This is an important issue because butterflies are incredible pollinators and with the decreasing bee populations in the Thunder Bay/Shuniah region, the necessity for other pollinators is on the rise.
Action
McKenzie students grew 200 milkweed plants for dispersal amongst the school community and Claude Garton School students. Students planted a butterfly garden at school and were sent home with plants to plant in gardens at home.
