McKitrick Community School’s Medicine Wheel
Vision
McKitrick Community School’s Student Leadership Counsel and Community Garden Club decided on a Medicine Wheel for our LSF project. We envisioned the space as a peaceful place for meditation & reflection, as well as a place for ceremonies and celebrations, welcoming to staff, students and their families, neighbors and the community at large.
Action
Firstly, we consulted our Living Sky School division’s Indigenous advisor, to help us plan the Medicine Wheel space. We ordered the gravel for the perimeter pathway and sourced traditional medicinal plants and also purchased hardy local perennial for the quadrants. The student and teacher gardeners have been working hard, cleaning, and preparing the garden and the Medicine Wheel area.
Reflection & Celebration
Our whole school will be using the Garden/Medicine Wheel for education, ceremonies, meditation, and cultural sharing. The grade 6 class is planning a family gathering in June 2022 as part of their farewell celebration. Our committee of gardener volunteers will maintain and groom the space for the summer holidays and we plan to welcome back staff and students with a ceremony hosted by a local elder in September 2022. We are so grateful to LSF for helping our vision for this Community space come to life, hopefully for many seasons to come.
